Class QC-1 (QCJ-1) covered hoppers entered service between 1958 and 1977 and are designed to transport ammonium nitrate. They started life as Class AZ-4 open iron ore hoppers and were converted to Class QC-1 between 1986 and 1989, when the upper structures were added atop the original ore bins.
