This tunnel was once on the Central RR of New Jersey line through the Lehigh Gorge. As a cost cutting move for the ever marginal CNJ, along with the LV, which also ran through the gorge and was in financially shaky condition, the two roads consolidated their trackage through the area, keeping the best parts of each line, in 1965. Now some of it is part of a state park, and is used as a trail. This view is from trackside on the Reading & Northern, the heir to a series of corporate changes that left them as owner of the route. Were look across the Lehigh River into the darkness of a CNJ tunnel. |
