CB&Q SD9s 443 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad SD9s 443 at Galva Illinois on August 26, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler Built on EMD Order 5549, twenty of these SD9s model were delivered to the CB&Q between August and September 1957. They were assigned road numbers 440-459 (later, BN 6187-6206), and were unique to the Q in a few aspects. They had a single fuel tank, a single control stand (thus the suffix 's' in the SD9s model designation), and they had a single Mars light. Previous SD9 orders all had two Mars lights and two fuel tanks, some equipped with steam generators, and one tank carried waterProminent in this photo is the rectangular exhaust stack partially covering the second (from the rear) radiator intake grill. This was for the Vapor Clarkson standby heater which was installed in the carbody below the radiators. Its purpose was to provide heat and circulation for the diesel engine cooling water, allowing the diesel to be shut down in cold weather. This feature was seldom employed due to the difficulty in restarting the diesel prime mover with cold batteries. |

CB&Q SD9s 454 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad SD9s 454 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in March 1961, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built September 1957 (c/n 23633) on EMD Order 5549, it became BN 6201 and was retired February 1985. It was one of 20 (#'s 440-459) built in what the CB&Q classed as a SD9s, the lower case "s" denoting a single control stand. Most CB&Q SD9 locomotives were equipped with dual controls and signal (Mars) lights on both ends. The 20 class SD9s had a single fuel tank and single signal light on the front only. This order represented the last SD9's delivered to the CB&Q, although subsidiary C&S received two orders of SD9's (#'s 820-830 and 831-842), the second order being Phase II design with a taller cab and short hood, 48" fans, and a fuel breather pipe. This order brought the CB&Q total of SD9's to 80, and with the addition of the 23 C&S SD9's, the systemwide total was 103 units, second only to the Southern Pacific. |

ASAB 503 |
Description: |
35 years ago there was a terrible derailment on the Atlanta & Saint Andrews Bay Railway (also known as the Bay Line) caused the release of chlorine gas from one of the tankers. As a result 8 or 9 people were killed from the deadly gas, and at least 2,500 people in a 5 mile radius were evacuated. It was later determined that someone had sabotaged the tracks. ASAB 503 was one locomotive out of a 5 or 6 engine consist, and the only one that was a total loss. |
