Its cylinders were 9.5"x16", a far cry from locomtives vhat would follow. The loco is now a permanent display at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry along the Lake Michigan shoreline. 0-4-0 Mississippi at the 1934 Century of Progess Worlds Fair |
Description: |
Here is a cleaned up verson although it doesn't add much more detail than the original sepia colored photo. The cab cover was added for this 1934 display. It is the only surviving locomotive from the Natchez & Hamburg RR in Mississippi. According to the Museum website, this loco was originally salvaged by James Hoskins of Brookhaven, MS, and donated to the Illinois Certral for the Chicago Columbian Exposition in 1893 and ran under its own power to reach Chicago. It was then donated to the Museum in 1938 after its appearance in the 1934 Worldl's Fair. Quite a unique piece of railroading history. |

Here is the original small photo showing the UP, BO & CB&Q displays at the World's Fair. On the back was the notation "Taken at The Century of Progress in Chicago 1934. Partial view of the railroad exhibit. The Union Pacific streamline train No. M-1000 +sic) can be seen at the extreem left." Note the misnumbered UP model. Even info on the backs of photos can be wrong! |
